State Champs: Sporting U16 Boys – McMahon Ford

Sporting’s U16 Boys – McMahon Ford bag a second, consecutive state championship.

This year’s State Cup final looked a lot like last year’s State Cup final. Sporting’s U16 Boys – McMahon Ford team met Lou Fusz’s U16 Boys – Popovic-White in the championship match for a second straight year. Both teams advanced out of the group stage after winning all three matches. Popovic-White beat club-mates Lou Fusz Boys – Wayland in the semifinal, 2-0. Sporting sent Lou Fusz Kekec home, 3-0, in their semi-final match-up.

The first half of the title game ended level, 1 to 1, but the oppressive heat made the second half a grind. Sporting scored quickly for the lead. As the half blazed on, players on both sides slowed. Sporting scored two more goals for a 4 – 1 total, and, with the heat and humidity, Lou Fusz faced an impossible task chasing the game. It ended 4 to 1, and Sporting’s 16s won their second state title in as many years.

Sporting’s 16s advance to the Region II championships. Region II hosts its championship series at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. Group play occurs June 24th thru the 26th.
